October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hello Everyone!

In addition to my domestic violence awareness post, another important issue I want to focus on today is breast cancer awareness. Cancer in general can be a difficult diagnosis to hear from your doctor. That's why education, screening, awareness, research, and support about cancer are so important.

According to http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org
Breast cancer is defined as a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue, but with early
detection and treatment, most people continue a normal life.

Facts according to http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org

1. One in eight women will be diagnosedwith breast cancer in their lifetime.

2. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

3. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.

4. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.

5. Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

Yes, I know these facts are rather frightening, but as I stated earlier it is known that early detection can be very helpful in combating and surviving the illness. So everone please be aware of the seriousness of breast cancer and all cancers in general. Just like the facts stated, men can have breast cancer just as women can at any age. Please take the time to do self breast exams and look for any lumps etc. to discuss with your doctor.
