Depression Awareness: Depression and Anxiety

Hello Everyone!

What is Anxiety?

A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

My Personal Experiences

Over the years I've noticed that I only have severe anxiety when I feel overly stressed. I'll admit having depression and anxiety at the same time is not fun, and it leaves me feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically drained. I guess the only way I can describe these feelings would include: worrying about everything (anxiety) and too tired to care about anything (depression). During times that I've had exteme anxiety and depression I've actually passed out on two different occasions. This is something that doesn't happen often, but it's still a need for concern.

Anxiety can leave people feeling afraid. I say that because for those who suffer badly from anxiety it can leave you fearing when or where you'll have your next panic attack. I remember a few years ago I had to go to the doctor for standard blood work, so obviously I couldnt have any food after midnight, I didn't go to bed until really late, and I was already suffering from anxiety and depression issues because of end of the year stress from finals, other activities during my Senior year in college,  and some things that were going on in my personal life. Well long story short, all that apparently played a part of me having a full fledged panic attack while I was getting blood drawn. I started crying, shaking, and I passed out. When I woke up I was very confused on what was going on. Once they stabilized me, It's safe to say that I left the doctors office with bruised arms and a sense of unnecessary shame. Not one of my fondest memories...

During the times that I've felt extremely overwhelmed and overly anxious, I try to take a  step back and just breathe to help myself calm down. I also use a focal point to when I'm experiencing anxiety. When I focus on an object that's around me, I usually calm down and feel better. I guess it's true when you're distracted it can help take your mind off anxiety. I may not have anxiety on a constant basis, but I know what it feels like even though the symptoms vary person to person.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  2. I love when you do awareness posts, Pilar! It's good to talk about these things even if it's hard, and also to let others know they aren't alone. I always hate that tight heavy feeling in my chest when I get anxiety. It hurts physically and mentally. I mostly tend to worry a lot but I also have a hard time distracting myself whem I'm worrying about something!

    1. Thanks Ashley! I can very hard to discuss my anxiety, but you're it's good to talk about these things! I don't know what's worse the worry that's associated with anxiety or the physical symptoms! Both can be very draining! Have you tried a focal point when you have anxiety? Like looking at picture or an object? That helps me sometimes when I have anxiety.

  4. I had a lot of anxiety in college. It was very confusing because I didn't know what was going on and why I was feeling how I was feeling. It's good to have posts like this to help people understand themselves or others that are going through this.

    1. Thanks! I'm somewhat the same way. I try not excessively worry, but it can be a challenge. I think that I've gotten better with coping with my anxiety in the past few years.

  9. I can't tell you how much I love this series. Thanks for talking about it. There is such a stigma around anxiety and depression and as someone who regularly has pretty awful panic attacks, I really appreciate these posts.

    1. Thanks Margo! I'm glad that you appreciate these posts! You're right, and I think that there shouldn't be stigma around anxiety and depression. Both conditions can be treated through medication and therapy etc.
