October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hello Everyone!

In addition to my domestic violence awareness post, another important issue I want to focus on today is breast cancer awareness. Cancer in general can be a difficult diagnosis to hear from your doctor. That's why education, screening, awareness, research, and support about cancer are so important.

According to http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org
Breast cancer is defined as a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue, but with early
detection and treatment, most people continue a normal life.

Facts according to http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org

1. One in eight women will be diagnosedwith breast cancer in their lifetime.

2. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

3. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.

4. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.

5. Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

Yes, I know these facts are rather frightening, but as I stated earlier it is known that early detection can be very helpful in combating and surviving the illness. So everone please be aware of the seriousness of breast cancer and all cancers in general. Just like the facts stated, men can have breast cancer just as women can at any age. Please take the time to do self breast exams and look for any lumps etc. to discuss with your doctor.

October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Hello Everyone!

Today's post is going to be a little different than the topics I normally discuss. Since October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month this is what I want to focus my post on today. On the local new about a week ago, it was reported the state I live in South Carolina is ranked #1 in the nation for domestic violence. Disturbing right...most definitely! It's not the fact the South Carolina is ranked #1, moreover that this problem is ongoing in general.  It breaks my heart to know so many people are being abused and mistreated. I said people because men can be victims as well, anyone can be a victim of domestic violence.

In 2007, I was writing a paper on domestic violence (I chose the topic) and for one of my resources I called Sistercare. Sistercare is an organization and shelter in South Carolina that helps women (and her child(ren) in abusive relationships etc. Well I had a lengthy conversation with the one of the counselors, and she gave me so many disturbing facts and statistics as I will say again were just heartbreaking to hear. I knew most of the things she told me, but to think the problem is actually getting worse. At the time in 2007, South Carolina was #7 and now the state is at the top of the list.
*UPDATE: AS OF 2015, SOUTH CAROLINA IS RANKED ONCE AGAIN #1 IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Thankfully, I never grew up in an abusive home nor have I ever been in a physically abusive relationship. People should be aware of how others treat you, those are usually telltale signs of what's to come. It's been known that verbal and emotionally abuse can lead to physical abuse. The pain and suffering these victims endure is awful and even worse sadly many victims suffer in silence because of fear, shame, and embarrassment.

If you are currently in this type of situation, please get help and have a safety plan. Your safety (and your child(ren) are what's most important. There are people who are there to help you i.e., the police and/or shelters. If you know someone in this situation please be supportive, and not judgmental. I think sometimes people can come off as unintentionally judgmental when offering support.

Abusive victims shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed because it is their abuser who has the issues of anger control etc. I'm not one to attack anyone's character, but let's face facts abusers need help themselves hence counseling or jail time for their inappropriate violent actions. Well everyone I close this post with food for thought…a push or shove is never ok, love should never hurt.

Drugstore (CVS)/Walmart Mini Haul

Hello Everyone!

Disclaimer:
My apologies for the missing pictures. My pictures were accidentally deleted off my blog. Please Refer to my Instagram account miss_pilar to view the pictures (or some of the pictures) that were deleted.

So I've been absent a few days bc I've been a little under the weather with the season changing to Fall...The joy of having allergies and sinuses...NOT! lol Well anyway I've also been focusing my time on working on a new Afghan and I can't wait to show you all :)

Now on to today's post my current mini haul. I went to Walmart and CVS the other day and picked up a few items.

1. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser for normal to oily skin

You probably have noticed I've been using Cetaphil products lately, and they're great! This isn't a new product for me I just started using it again to switch things up.

2. Dial Coconut Water & Bamboo Leaf Extract Ultra Fresh Hydrating Body Wash

This is another product thats not new for me lol I mentioned this in product in my Bath/Beauty products post. Since I'm running low, I just bought a new bottle.

3. Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm (Pink Pout)

Ok, I'm still undecided how I feel about this product. I like that the lip balm is very hydrating on my lips. The lip balm smells really nice, to me it smells like cocoa butter or a cookie. I also really like the color, however the color isn't very pigmented. I feel like I had to keep re-applying just to make the color more noticeable. I'm not too disappointed since it didn't cost that much. I'm going to wear the lip balm, but for now im undecided if I'll repurchase.

4. Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss (Berry Allure)

I actually didn't pick this out. Remember I mentioned I was under the weather with allergies...well my mom was at CVS the other day, and got me me lip gloss and a Cosmo magazine. Wasn't that sweet of her :) I've never tried this color before, but when I tried it I loved it! It's not too dark and it's a perfect color for Fall. This color is really pigmented, and hydrating. It's also long lasting, I only re-applied once. Another plus is that its by Revlon and I love their products! As for the Cosmo magazine she just got it for me since it's my favorite magazine lol

Germ X Atomic Apple Hand Sanitizer

This smells really good and it keeps the germs away! Enough said lol :)

There you have it my mini haul. I also purchased about 6 rolls of yarn for my Afghan. I'm not going to show the colors until I finish my project, be on the lookout for that :)

Crocheting Project: Half Double Crochet Fingerless Gloves

Hey Everyone!

Disclaimer:
My apologies for the missing pictures. My pictures were accidentally deleted off my blog. Please Refer to my Instagram account miss_pilar to view the pictures (or some of the pictures) that were deleted.

Well in my last crocheting post, I mentioned about starting an Afghan...no worries I started on it Tuesday :) First I wanted to take a little detour and make another one of "my first" projects...fingerless gloves. I've been crocheting like crazy lately!! Well back to the fingerless gloves. They were really easy to make, and it didn't take me long at all to make these gloves. The lovely thing about this project is that I used some of my scrap yarn to make the gloves...what a wonderful way to use scrap yarn!

In addition to crocheting, I put my sewing skills to use to sew on on the light blue borders. I guess this was a two in one kind of project lol!

Half Double Crochet Fingerless Gloves

Left Hand

Back of left hand

 Right hand

Both gloves together

By using the half double crochet pattern the gloves are thick, warm, and very roomy.
