How to Wear a Matte Lip

Hello Everyone!

Me wearing MAC's All Fired Lipstick

To wear a matte lip or not to wear a matte lip? I think anyone who loves lipstick has asked themselves this question at some point or another. As for those who haven't, the first thought that may have come to your mind is that matte lipstick is so drying. Well today, I wanted to share a few tips I have for wearing matte lipstick. Side Note: Yes, I recycled pictures I've used in my previous posts lol

What is a matte lipstick?

A matte lipstick is a type of lipstick that usually last all day, has a dry texture, and lacks shine.

1. Prepare your lips (exfoliate)

You can prepare a lip scrub at home: Mix sugar, coconut oil, lemon, and honey. Gently massage your lips with it for couple of minutes, then rinse; you lips will feel soft and smooth. See my Beauty DIY : Homemade Sugar Lip Scrub HERE

2.  Moisturize your lips

A good lip balm is your best friend when wearing a matte lip. Using a lip balm will help create a smooth surface for your matte lipstick. I like to use Nivea Lip Balm especially for MAC's Retro Matte Lipsticks. MAC's Prep+Prime for Lips also works well for moisturizing your lips.

3. Use a lip pencil

I like to wear lip pencils with some of my matte lips. I find by wearing lip liner helps keep my lipstick neat and it helps make my matte lipstick wear even longer during the day. Side note, if you choose to wear a lip pencil with your matte lipstick, you can apply it before or after using a lip balm. I apply my lip pencil before I use a lip balm. Then I add the lip balm on top.

4. Blot your lips

To avoid overly dry looking lips that look caked, blot your lips!

5. Don't rub your lips together!

Sure you can blot your lips, but rubbing them together is a NO NO! I think that is the worst feeling ever is to rub my lips together when I'm using a matte lipstick. Ouch!

6. Add a lip gloss

There are days that I want to wear my lip gloss on top of my matte lipstick. If you can't live without some shine to your lipstick, try a lip gloss on top.

Great tips for wearing a matte lip! I don't wear matte lipstick that often, but when I do I'll wear a lip gloss on top.

This is a great post Pilar! I never thought to apply the lip liner and the the balm before the lip stick. I'll have to try that! I don't own many matte lipsicks but I do find that applying a lip liner helps them not feel so dry and make them easier to apply too!

This is excellent advice Pilar! I always exfoliate and moisturize. I don't want the lipstick to lay into fine lines.

Thanks! My mom taught me that when I was a teenager about the lip liner and lip balm, so I've been doing that for years! It really makes all the difference! I love how lip liner can be so useful when applying lipstick!

Thank you! Using lip liner sometimes is a way of life for me lol!

Thank you! Very true! That's exactly why I exfoliate and moisturize, to prevent the lipstick from being in fine lines!

For some reason I never thought to sandwich balm between liner and lipstick. Good idea!

Thank you! You should try lip balm between the lip liner and lipstick, I find it does make a difference and my lipstick looks neat!
