Sunshine

Hello Everyone!

Sometimes in life you have to create your own sunshine.

Last week marked one year since I started going back to counseling. I mentioned back in May that I switched counselors earlier this year....which was the best decision that I've made in terms of my treatment. I'm not going to discredit all the progress I've made despite having to change counselors. A year is still a year right?

I titled this post sunshine because where there is light there is hope. Last year I felt like I was in such a dark place emotionally and thankfully I don't feel like that now. Sure I have days that I feel depressed or anxious but I don't feel like depression and anxiety is taking over my life like before. I have more clarity.

Brighter days lie ahead

Depression and anxiety are constantly battles for me. I've learned to cope better on the days that aren't so great. I've learned to let go of relationships with people that no longer serve a influential or meaningful purpose in my life. I've learned to stop feeling guilt for things beyond my control. Counseling has help me rediscover who I am.

A smile bright as the sun

I've been to counseling in the past when I was in college and just like my college days, I have to do the work in sorting out my feelings and things in my life. In life you have to step into the solution and not stay in the problem. I've done this in many areas in my life. Change takes dedication, time, and work, but in the end it's all worth it.

I think one of the misconceptions about counseling includes people go to counseling to complain about their problems or how bad their life is going etc. That's simply not always true. I've had counseling sessions where I talk about how things are going well in my life. I don't always have a problem or feel sad. Counselors are not supposed to fix your life. Counselors are there to help you find solutions to effectively live a healthy and fulfilling life. Will I stop going to counseling?...probably not. I like the progress that I've accomplished so far with taking control of my mental health. In speaking of mental health, don't forget to check out my prior post, Emotional Self Care
